Air Disturbance From Hinged Doors?

What is the real difference between sliding doors and hinged doors, apart from the fact they look different and work differently?

Sliding doors require less valuable space than hinged doors and when operated, produce less air disturbance making them ideal for hospital environments where hygiene is a priority. Take a look at the picture below – the blue shading represents the air disturbance that the doors a creating when in operation, and as shown, the hinged door nearly swings up a tornado.

Sliding doors simply cut through the air causing minimal disturbance in clean room environments, whereas hinged doors can disrupt the airflow each time they are opened. This uncontrolled air can accelerate the spread of airborne micro-organisms by air currents and may infect susceptible hosts in operating theatres and isolation wards.

A Sliding Door:

  • Creates 70% less air disturbance than hinged doors
  • Reduces the spread of micro-organisms
  • Is safer, provides convenient access for high traffic areas.
  • Generates extra floor space: on average 10-15%
  • A better solution for those with limited space
  • Eliminates the chance of a door being opened into someone.
