Preventing Cargo Theft

Security-minded companies in New Zealand today are looking for proactive methods to help maintain the integrity of their supply chain. Protecting against threat, theft, and contamination whilst maintaining environmental control is of utmost importance.

When it comes to the dock loading area, a common breakdown occurs when the security seal is broken on the trailer doors outside the building and the doors are opened in the drive approach. This exposes product to outside elements, temperature fluctuation, and potential product tampering. The fact is, loading docks now play an important role in helping to ensure the security of virtually any facility–as well as the flow of incoming and outgoing trailers.

Securing a truck or trailer at the dock with a vehicle restraint can help prevent theft and reduce contamination, all while improving the safety of dock workers. Once a truck is secured at the dock, temperature and humidity control are of concern. Any gaps at the loading dock can make it hard to maintain environmental control. Finally, bridging the gap between the loading dock floor and the trailer bed is crucial. A vertical storing leveler allows a company to maintain control over product in the truck because trailer doors are able to stay closed until the truck is secured at the dock.

In most instances, a systematic approach that incorporates automatic vehicle restraints, vertical dock levelers, appropriate seals/shelters, and the proper sequence of operation is the best way to secure a loading dock as part of the supply chain.

PREVENTING THEFT:

Ulti Group has multiple ways to prevent theft at your loading docks, by securing the truck or trailer to the building. The Dok-Lok restraint uses a rotating hook system to secure the rear impact guard of the trailer to the wall. But not all trailers can be secured by a rotating hook, such as lift gate trailers and trailers with damaged or missing rear impact guards.

To provide the most diverse protection for your application, Ulti Group offers Global Wheel Locks and Manual Wheel Lock restraints, which secure the trailer tyre instead of the rear impact guard that may be bent or broken. In addition to providing a visual deterrent to potential thieves the wheel locks have security latches which lock down the restraint and are controlled from inside your facility, giving your personnel ultimate control of security and safety at your dock loading area.

Not only do these trailer wheel locks prevent thieves getting into trailers but they prevent ‘dock separation’ accidents, where the trailer may slip away from the dock causing a gap to open and creating a hazard for both personnel and equipment.
