Door Activation: Making Sure Doors Open When They Should – and Don’t When They Shouldn’t

In an ELA, two activation types are most common:
Floor Induction Loop
A Floor Induction Loop is installed directly into the concrete floor in front of the door. A wire loop is set to channel cut into the floor, grouted in place, and connected to the door’s control system. When a forklift passes over the loop, the steel in the vehicle disrupts the magnetic field the loop generates – and the door opens automatically.
The key advantage in an ELA setting: the floor loop responds to steel, not motion. That means pedestrians on foot won’t trigger unnecessary door cycles. In a shared zone where keeping the door closed except when needed is essential to temperature control, this selectivity matters.
Floor loops can be cast in at the time of the concrete pour or cut in after the fact. The upfront installation cost is higher than surface-mounted sensors, but in cold stores and food processing facilities where controlled access is a priority, the long-term reliability is worth it.
Contactless Sensor (Radar Activation)
A Contactless Sensor detects motion within a small radar window – typically up to 50cm – and activates the door without any physical contact. This makes it a hygienic option in food processing environments, where eliminating contact points is important for compliance.
Radar sensors work well in lower-traffic zones or where the activation needs to work for both forklifts and pedestrians. In busy ELA environments with mixed traffic, a floor induction loop – or a combination of both – often provides better control over unnecessary door cycles.
